Legislation
Why are these rebates/programs being offered?
In 2008, Public Act #295 was passed by the Michigan State Legislature in the interest of
reducing the number of new power plants that need to be built in Michigan to keep up with the increased demand for gas and electricity,
and to encourage consumers to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings.
Funding of Programs
Who is paying for these programs?
All electric customers are paying an Energy Optimization charge to their provider to cover the cost of these
programs.
Appliance Recycling
How does the appliance recycling program work?
If you have a secondary refrigerator/freezer that you want to recycle, call 877.296.4319 to schedule
an appointment to have it picked up. We come out, pick it up, dismantle it, and recycle the components. Afterward, you will receive a rebate
check of $30 in the mail.
How much energy should I expect to save?
Depending on the age and model of the refrigerator/freezer that is removed/recycled
(not replaced), you could save up to 900 KHW per year (or about $90).
What appliances qualify under the recycling program?
Currently both refrigerator and freezer recycling is available to all Energy Optimization
customers.

Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency that sets standards and encourages energy efficiency in homes and businesses.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL)
Why should I purchase CFL bulbs?
A CFL uses 75% less energy than an incandescent light. CFL's generally last 10 times longer than
an incandescent light. We have rebates available to reduce the extra cost of the CFL's.
How much energy should I expect to save?
Lighting accounts for about 20% of residential electricity costs, you could save 75% of that by
switching to CFL's.
Smart Power Strips
What is a smart power strip?
A smart power strip is an energy efficient surge protector with built-in technology that can
stop the draw of electricity when devices are not being used. In an average home, 75% of the electricity utilized for electronics and
appliances (computers, televisions, microwaves, DVD players) is consumed while they are turned off. A smart power strip will automatically
stop the draw of energy for all peripheral devices when it has detected the primary device has gone into sleep or standby mode.
It also has a feature that allows you to plug additional devices into specific outlets that require power at all times (alarm clock, DVR,
cordless phone/answering machines).
Why should I purchase a smart power strip?
To save electricity - 75% of the electricity electronics use is consumed while they are
turned off.
Where can I purchase these and how much are they?
Smart power strips cost $30 - $50. They can be purchased at many local hardware stores, big box
retailers, home improvement stores and stores that sell housewares or office supplies. Ask your local retailer to order one for
you.

ECM Motors
What is an ECM?
It stands for Electronically Commutated Motor and it replaces the standard blower motor in
a furnace to reduce the electricity used to operate the blower. An ECM's speed can be adjusted to match the needs of the furnace system.
The ECM has a higher efficiency rating than the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment that has the typical electric
blower or condenser fan motor. The ECM uses less energy than the standard Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motor that is most commonly
used in condensers and air handlers to move air. A significant benefit to this motor is that it maintains at or near, ambient temperature
where the PSC motor heats up to approximately 90° to 170° Fahrenheit. Therefore, upgrading to an ECM saves additional energy and costs by
not having to compensate to cool the motor.
By upgrading to an ECM you will consume less energy when your air conditioner and heating system is running. This means lower utility costs!
Online Audit Program
What is the online audit?
The online audit is a series of questions about your home, its systems and general lifestyle
habits like: 'How many loads of laundry do you do in a week?' Based on your answers and specialized research, it provides a list of
recommended energy saving measures to implement that are specific to your home. You will be able to rank the list based on cost effectiveness,
ease of installation, or energy savings. The online audit is a tool you can use to improve the energy efficiency of your home.
How do I get my free energy saving kit?
You must complete the 'Full Profile' online audit and request a kit and one will be mailed to
you.
